Stanwood Elkus from California had decades of erectile dysfunction caused by a botched operation that happened in 1992 at Veterans Affairs Hospital in Long Beach California.

For decades he complained of low sex drive and erectile dysfunction which had caused him no end of aggravation when it came to his sex life.

The surgeon had recommended the operation on him for a narrowing of the urethra called urethral stricture but never did the operation himself. Apparently, according to other doctors, he was misdiagnosed.  Stanwood complained for years that his sex life had suffered and blamed everything on this operation.

All of this had led him to take revenge on the surgeon which resulted in a homicide. Stanwood Elkus then went back to the surgery after all these years and checked in under an alias. He then went into the examination room and waited for the surgeon – Ronald Gilbert who initially recommended his surgery decades before, and pulled the gun on him when he finally walked into the room.

The surgeon was shot dead after 10 shots and he was just about to celebrate his 53rd birthday. After shooting the surgeon in front of the nurse, he then stated: “I am insane so call the police”.

Law enforcement had mentioned that this was not the work of a mentally ill person but more of a revenge attack on the surgeon for organizing the surgery which was unnecessary. Elkus who is now in a wheelchair and partially deaf will be facing the rest of his life in prison. He is 79 years old and has been sentenced to first-degree murder.

Prosecutors stated that the murder had been well planned and that he had been in a failed relationship with his long-term girlfriend and had blamed the dysfunction and botched surgery on this failed relationship. Elkus had even planned to marry his girlfriend so he was in a very troubled state which had led him to take this awful revenge out on Gilbert.

Elkus had also been on anti-depressants and had Dementia so a combination of these two factors could have had something to do with this spark of insanity.
